Owner of MHF Outdoors. Waterfowl hunting has not always been a part of my life. I grew up hunting pheasants, deer and small game but quickly fell victim to the sport of waterfowling after experiencing a September teal hunt back in high school. Ever since then, I have dedicated most of my free time every fall to chasing the migration. Watching the world come to life every morning afield is something that I take refuge in and truly enjoy. The type of hunting that I most enjoy is hunting over water especially for the various kinds of diving ducks. The sight of 25 bluebills, wings locked, really gets my blood flowing. My perspective on waterfowl hunting entails me to learn as much as I can and pass that knowledge down to others along the way. It gives me great satisfaction to participate in waterfowl hunting every year and is something I hope to do for the rest of my life.

Age 23. My story takes you back to Vermillion, South Dakota where I was born and raised, just one mile away from the Missouri River flyway, which is some of the best duck and goose hunting around. I started off hunting waterfowl with my dad when I was old enough to walk with him. I can still remember times to this day like it was yesterday. I got my first duck and goose call handed down to me at the age of six from my dad’s best friend, Jim. I practiced night and day along side of my dad learning everything I could about how to blow them right. That same year, my dad passed his gun to me for my first chance in taking a giant Canadian goose, and that same day, a beautiful Northern Green Head. That was the best day of my life with my father. I had many more great times with my father, but that one day stands out the most to me and I will always have that.

After that, hunting was in my blood. I didn't want to do anything else but spend time out there chasing waterfowl. As I got older, I got more into it. My dad would get me out of school during peak migration and we would go spend all day hunting ducks and geese. My passion for waterfowl grew to an addiction. I was sixteen when I got myself into snow goose hunting to step things up for a change. That type of waterfowl hunting is a whole other world to me. Words can not describe watching five hundred snows drop in from a mile high with their twist and turns to twenty yards right over you to take the shot. It made it even better when my dad got to experience it along with me. That’s always one thing my dad use to teach me, is that hunting is not just about killing things. Its about a passion, a passion for hunting with family and friends. To go out and know that your not going to kill them all, but go out and make some great new stories.

During my high school years, hunting took over really bad. My heart was set on one thing only. I went out before and after school chasing deer, doves, pheasants and, most important, waterfowl. I loved it and just hated sitting in class watching out the window for the migration to pick up. When I turned 17, I got to know an Adam Johnson, owner of First Flight Finishers. He would be the start in my guiding career. We started talking over the phone then one day, showed up and offered me a job. I blew some calls to show him what I’m made of and talked about ducks and geese until the sun went down. It was by far the most exciting day in my life, being able to do something I love to do so much for a living. I worked for Adam for a year and a half. I called a lot of geese in with him, and met some of the best people that I still know today and are great friends with. Right after that, I went and worked with Larry Freimann of Black Goose Outfitters, which was one of my best choices ever. I’ve been to Canada, all the way to Missouri, and them some hunting geese with him.

I got to meet people and hunt September to April for snows and Canadian geese. Like anyone, no matter how old you are, you always learn something new. With Larry, I learned a lot. I am currently working for Larry chasing geese all over and having a blast. In the spring of 2009, right after are guiding ended, I landed a job working as a Waterfowl Research Tech for Ducks Unlimited for most of the summer in the study and banding of ducks in the prairie pothole area of North Dakota. That was one of the most amazing jobs ever, I not only got to handle waterfowl but learn things I would have never known. To be able to get up in the morning and be out in the wild and see the things I saw was just a breath taking experience for me.
